No two addictions look exactly the same, so treatment should not be copied and pasted. Alcohol withdrawal can bring serious medical risks, opioid dependence may call for medication support, and benzodiazepine recovery often needs a slower, more careful pace. Stimulant use can bring its own challenges, too, especially around sleep, mood, and cravings.
At Surfpoint Recovery, the plan starts with the person, not just the substance. A qualified rehab in Brooklyn will look at medical history, withdrawal risks, mental health, family support, and what has or has not worked before. From there, the care team can tailor treatment to the patient’s real needs rather than forcing everyone into the same program.
What Does an Individualized Treatment Plan Actually Look Like?
An individualized treatment plan is not a checklist. It is a clinical document built from a full picture of the patient: which substances they have used, how long, in what quantities, and what medical or mental health factors are present alongside the addiction.
On admission day, our clinical team conducts a thorough intake assessment. A nurse takes vitals, reviews medical history, and collects a urine screen. The information gathered shapes every decision that follows: whether the patient enters medically supervised detox first or goes directly into the residential rehabilitation program, which medications are appropriate, and what therapeutic approaches are most likely to be effective.
The plan is not fixed on day one. It is adjusted throughout the stay based on the patient's progress and any new clinical information that emerges. Our treatment programs are built around this flexibility.
Opioid Use Disorder: What Tailored Treatment Involves
Opioid use disorder, whether involving heroin, fentanyl, or prescription opioids like oxycodone, requires a medically managed detox process. The physical withdrawal symptoms, while rarely life-threatening, are intense enough that unmanaged withdrawal is one of the most common reasons people relapse before treatment even begins.
Our medical team, led by Dr. Ramsey Joudeh, evaluates each opioid-dependent patient and determines whether medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is clinically appropriate. When it is, medications such as Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) or Buprenorphine are used to reduce withdrawal severity and curb cravings. For some patients, Vivitrol (extended-release naltrexone) is introduced after detox is complete to reduce relapse risk. Our DEA authorization means we can administer these medications on-site throughout the treatment process.
Once physically stable, the patient transitions into our residential rehabilitation program, where individual counseling and group therapy address the behavioral and psychological dimensions of opioid dependence.
Alcohol Use Disorder: Why Medical Supervision Changes Everything
Alcohol withdrawal is one of the most medically serious detox processes. In patients who are physically dependent, stopping suddenly can trigger seizures and, in severe cases, delirium tremens (DTs). This is not a process that can be safely managed at home.
Our physician-directed tapering protocol gradually reduces the body's dependence on alcohol while nursing staff monitor vital signs and manage symptoms around the clock. The acute phase of alcohol withdrawal typically resolves within five to ten days, at which point the patient moves into the rehabilitation program.
For alcohol use disorder, the rehabilitation phase often reveals underlying conditions, including depression, anxiety, or trauma that have been driving the drinking. Our psychiatric evaluation, conducted within 24 hours of rehab admission, ensures those conditions are identified and treated alongside the addiction.
Benzodiazepine Dependence: A Slower, More Careful Process
Benzodiazepines, including Xanax, Klonopin, and Valium, carry withdrawal risks that are similar in severity to alcohol. Detox from these medications requires a carefully managed tapering protocol under continuous physician supervision.
The timeline for benzo detox is often longer than for alcohol or opioid detox, sometimes running ten to fourteen days or more, depending on which medication was used and how long it was taken. Our nursing staff provides continuous monitoring throughout, and the medical team adjusts the protocol as the patient progresses.
Patients with benzodiazepine dependence frequently have an underlying anxiety disorder or other mental health condition that contributed to their use. The psychiatric evaluation that follows admission into our rehabilitation program allows us to address that directly.
Co-Occurring Disorders: When Addiction and Mental Health Overlap
A significant number of people who enter inpatient treatment for substance use disorder also have an undiagnosed or undertreated mental health condition. Depression and opioid use disorder frequently occur together. Anxiety and benzodiazepine dependence often reinforce each other. PTSD and alcohol use disorder are a common pairing.
Treating only the addiction while leaving the mental health condition unaddressed significantly raises the risk of relapse. This is why every patient entering our residential rehabilitation program at Surfpoint Recovery receives a full psychiatric evaluation within 24 hours of admission. If a co-occurring condition is present, it is treated as part of the same integrated plan by the same clinical team, from day one.
Who Builds the Treatment Plan at Our Brooklyn Facility?
The treatment plan is built collaboratively by licensed clinicians with verifiable credentials. Dr. Ramsey Joudeh, our Medical Director, oversees all medical decisions, including detox protocols and MAT. Vincent Marchese, our Program Director (MSW, Fordham University; Advanced CASAC), shapes the counseling and therapeutic programming. Alet Coke, our Clinical Director, oversees the overall quality and coordination of each patient's care.
No patient at Surfpoint Recovery is assigned a generic plan. The clinical team reviews each intake assessment and builds a plan specific to that person's history, substance use, medical background, and personal goals. You can learn more about our facility and team on our Coney Island facility page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Surfpoint Recovery create individualized treatment plans for every patient? Yes. Every patient receives a treatment plan built from their specific intake assessment, including substance history, medical background, and mental health status. The plan is reviewed and adjusted throughout the stay based on clinical progress.
What happens if a patient has both an addiction and a mental health condition? Every patient entering our residential rehabilitation program receives a full psychiatric evaluation within 24 hours of admission. Co-occurring conditions, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, and others, are treated alongside substance use disorder by the same integrated clinical team.
Does Surfpoint offer medication-assisted treatment for opioid dependence? Yes, when clinically appropriate. Our medical team may include Suboxone, Buprenorphine, Vivitrol, or Sublicaid in the treatment plan based on the patient's substance history and clinical presentation.
Is benzodiazepine detox offered at Surfpoint Recovery? Yes. Benzodiazepine detox at our facility uses a physician-supervised tapering protocol with continuous nursing oversight. Benzo withdrawal carries serious medical risks and should never be attempted without clinical supervision.
