Deciding to enter inpatient treatment is already a big step. After that, most people start thinking about the practical stuff: what to pack, what the first day looks like, how insurance works, and how long they may need to stay. Those questions are normal, and having answers ahead of time can make walking through the door feel less overwhelming.
At Surfpoint Recovery, the goal is to help patients arrive prepared rather than stressed about the details. An experienced rehab in Brooklyn can walk you through what to bring, what to leave at home, and what happens during admission. Knowing the process before you arrive gives you one less thing to worry about, so you can focus on getting better.
Start With Insurance Verification Before You Pack Anything
The first thing to do is confirm your insurance coverage. This happens before you arrive and costs you nothing.
Our dedicated insurance team verifies your coverage at no cost, so you know exactly what your plan covers before you make any commitment. We accept all major Medicaid plans, including Healthfirst, MetroPlus, Fidelis Care, Molina, and Wellcare, as well as Medicare and select commercial insurance plans. To start the verification process, submit the online admission form or call our intake team directly. A member of our team will walk you through the coverage details before any admission decision is made.
What to Bring to Our Brooklyn Facility
Packing for an inpatient stay is straightforward. The goal is practical comfort for the length of your stay. Bring enough clothing for your expected stay, comfortable and casual. Include basic toiletries: soap, shampoo, a toothbrush, deodorant, and anything else you use daily. Any prescription medications should come in their original, labeled bottles so our nursing team can review and manage them safely. You can also bring a personal contact list, reading material, and any assistive devices such as a cane or walker if needed.
Leave electronics at home. Phones, laptops, tablets, and similar devices are securely stored upon arrival and returned at discharge. Every room at our facility has a TV, and structured programming is available throughout your stay. Avoid bringing valuables like large amounts of cash or jewelry, and leave anything with alcohol content at home, including certain toiletries and mouthwash, unless clearly labeled alcohol-free.
What Happens on Your First Day
Arrival day can feel overwhelming. Understanding the process in advance makes it considerably less so.
When you arrive at 2316 Surf Avenue, Right Wing, 2nd Floor, Coney Island, Brooklyn, a staff member will meet you and walk you through intake paperwork. A nurse will then take your vitals, review your medical history, collect a urine sample, and go through your medications. Your belongings will be inventoried and any valuables secured. Based on the clinical assessment, you will be placed either in our medically supervised detox program or, if no detox is required, directly into our residential rehabilitation program. You will be oriented to the facility, the daily schedule, and the staff you will be working with before your first meal.
What Daily Life Looks Like During Your Stay
Structure is a significant part of why inpatient treatment works. Days at our facility are organized around clinical programming while still leaving room for rest and personal time.
Each day includes individual counseling sessions with a licensed clinician, group therapy sessions led by clinical staff, and recreational programming overseen by Sylvia Foldes-Berman, our Licensed Creative Arts Therapist and Board-Certified Music Therapist. Three meals are prepared daily by our in-house chef. Outdoor garden access is available up to four times per day, weather permitting. Nursing staff is on-site and available around the clock.
The structure is intentional. A consistent daily routine is part of the recovery process itself, and we design each day with that in mind.
How Long Will Your Stay Be
Most patients at Surfpoint Recovery stay between 21 and 28 days, covering both the detox and residential rehabilitation phases. The length is adjusted based on individual clinical progress and the substance involved.
For patients who require both detox and the full rehabilitation program, the combined stay can run 28 to 35 days. Your clinical team will give you a realistic timeline based on your specific situation. Discharge planning begins on day one of your stay, not the week before you leave. By the time you complete the program, you will have a specific aftercare plan built around your circumstances, your location, and your goals.
Planning for After You Leave
Leaving treatment is not the end of the clinical process. It is the beginning of a different phase, one that our team prepares you for throughout your stay.
Your discharge plan will include referrals to outpatient programs appropriate to your needs and location, support group recommendations, and, if you are on MAT medications like Suboxone or Vivitrol, a prescribing provider identified before you walk out the door. We do not hand you a list of phone numbers. We build a real, specific plan around your individual circumstances. You can read more about what to expect in our treatment process on our treatments page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I am not sure whether my insurance covers inpatient treatment? Call our admissions team or submit the online form. We verify coverage at no cost before any admission decision is made. We accept Medicaid, Medicare, and select commercial insurance plans.
Can a family member call on my behalf? Yes. If a family member is initiating the process, our admissions team can walk them through what they can do and what requires direct contact with the patient. We regularly work with families helping a loved one access treatment.
What if I arrive and need detox first? Many patients do. If your clinical assessment indicates physical dependence on alcohol, opioids, or benzodiazepines, you will begin medically supervised detox before transitioning into the rehabilitation program. Both phases happen at our Coney Island facility.
Are electronics allowed during my stay? Phones and other devices are securely stored upon arrival and returned at discharge. Rooms at our facility are equipped with TVs, and structured recreational programming is available throughout the stay.
