Supervised Medical Drug Detox

Surfpoint Recovery runs an inpatient drug detox program at 2316 Surf Avenue in Coney Island, Brooklyn, for adults withdrawing from stimulants or from more than one substance. Our OASAS-licensed, CARF-accredited facility has nursing staff on site around the clock, and every admission includes a urine test that shows which substances are in your system.

When opioids, benzodiazepines, or alcohol turn out to be the main substance, the same medical team manages withdrawal using the approach for that drug. Each of those programs has its own page on our site.

Signs That Quitting on Your Own Has Stopped Working

Many people who reach detox have already tried to stop on their own. The attempt usually ends with a crash, sleepless nights, or cravings strong enough that using again feels like the only relief. These patterns suggest supervised withdrawal is the safer route.

  • A crash that will not lift. Days of exhaustion, broken sleep, and a heavy, flat mood after a cocaine or meth binge.
  • Using to function. A stimulant gets you through the day, and a pill or a drink brings you down at night. Skipping either leaves you unable to work.
  • More than one substance. Cocaine with alcohol, pills with heroin, or something to sleep after a stimulant. Each drug changes how the others withdraw.
  • Drugs you cannot verify. Pills or powder bought outside a pharmacy may not contain what the seller claimed.
  • Paranoia, chest pain, or thoughts of self-harm when you stop. These need an in-person medical assessment. If you are in danger right now, call 911, or call or text 988.

These are medical problems, and none of them is a reason to feel ashamed.

How Withdrawal Changes With the Drug You Used

Each class of drug leaves the body differently, so no single detox protocol fits every patient. The table below is a general guide to what withdrawal usually involves.

SubstanceWhat withdrawal usually bringsMain clinical concern
Cocaine and crackA crash within hours, exhaustion, strong cravingsDepression, agitation, paranoia
Methamphetamine and other stimulantsLong sleep, heavy appetite, low mood that can lingerDepression and psychotic symptoms
Opioids, including fentanylSweating, cramps, vomiting, usually peaking within 36 to 72 hoursDehydration and medication timing
BenzodiazepinesAnxiety, tremor, insomniaSeizure risk, which calls for a supervised taper
AlcoholShakes, sweating, a racing heartSeizures and delirium tremens
Mixed useOverlapping symptoms from each drugInteractions between substances

Stimulant withdrawal rarely threatens the body the way alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal can. The greater risk is psychiatric. Depression after a binge can be severe, and some people experience paranoia or hallucinations as the drug clears. No medication reverses a stimulant crash, so standard care is supportive: rest, regular meals, fluids, sleep, and treatment of specific symptoms when a physician decides it is needed.

How Admission and the Early Days of Detox Work

The Intake Call

Our admissions team answers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A counselor will ask what you have been using and for how long, check your insurance benefits at no cost, and tell you what to bring: photo ID, your insurance card, and any prescription medications in their original labeled bottles.

Arrival and Medical Evaluation

An intake coordinator welcomes you to our trusted Brooklyn drug rehab, helps with the paperwork, and gives you a tour. A member of our nursing staff then takes your vital signs, asks about your medical history and current medications, and collects a urine sample to identify the substances in your system. In drug detox, this result matters because what someone bought and what they took can be two different things.

Choosing the Level of Care

Our medical team reviews the evaluation and decides whether you begin in detox or move directly into our 28-day short-term rehab. Someone coming off a cocaine binge with nothing else in their system needs a different plan from someone who has also taken a benzodiazepine every night for a year.

Psychiatric Evaluation

A psychiatric evaluation takes place within the first 24 hours of treatment. This matters most in stimulant withdrawal, because the crash is when depression, anxiety, and paranoia tend to surface. Where a mental health condition is identified, our dual diagnosis treatment addresses it alongside detox.

Monitoring Through the Night

Medical and nursing staff cover the building 24 hours a day and adjust care as symptoms change, including overnight. Clinical staff give every dose of medication, so patients never manage their own. Individual and group sessions begin as soon as you are well enough to join them.

Ready to talk it through? Call intake at (646) 347-1893 and describe what you have been using. The counselor will check your coverage on the same call and explain the next steps for admission.

Mixed Substance Use and a Street Supply You Cannot Trust

Using more than one drug is common. A typical pattern is a stimulant during the day and alcohol, a benzodiazepine, or an opioid at night. Daily alcohol or benzodiazepine use alongside cocaine adds a withdrawal seizure risk that a cocaine-only crash does not carry. Where benzodiazepines are involved, our benzodiazepine detox in Brooklyn relies on a supervised taper. Opioids taken with benzodiazepines or alcohol also slow breathing more than any of them alone. In general, the substance with the most dangerous withdrawal decides what is treated first.

The street supply adds another layer. Counterfeit pills sold in New York routinely contain fentanyl, so a person who believes they took only cocaine or pressed pills may have been exposed to an opioid without knowing it. When the urine test and evaluation point to opioid dependence, our physicians can start buprenorphine under supervision as part of our opioid detox in Brooklyn. Surfpoint Recovery holds the DEA registration needed to prescribe and administer that medication on site.

The Team and Credentials Behind the Program

Medical Director Dr. Ramsey Joudeh oversees medication decisions with Assistant Medical Director Joseph Turkel. Clinical Director Alet Coke leads the therapy side of our Brooklyn program. Program Director Vincent Marchese holds an Advanced CASAC credential and a Master of Social Work from Fordham University.

  • OASAS license. Surfpoint Recovery is licensed by the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports.
  • CARF accreditation. CARF accredited Surfpoint Recovery in 2023 with a three-year accreditation for residential substance use disorder treatment. You can verify it at carf.org under provider number 367286.
  • DEA registration. This registration allows our medical team to prescribe and administer the controlled medications used in medication-assisted treatment, such as buprenorphine, the main ingredient in Suboxone.
  • Google reviews. As of August 2026, Surfpoint Recovery held a 4.8-star rating across 136 Google reviews, which anyone can read before calling.

What Happens When Detox Ends

Detox settles the body, but it does not address the reasons someone kept using, and relapse after detox alone is common. At Surfpoint, detox is built to lead directly into our 28-day short-term rehab in Brooklyn at the same address, with the same team that managed your withdrawal.

That program combines individual and group counseling with cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma-informed counseling, and craving management groups. Patients also take part in recreational group therapy, AA and NA meetings, and life skills workshops.

Discharge planning covers relapse prevention, naloxone and overdose education, referrals to outpatient providers, and recovery coaching and peer mentorship for the weeks after you leave. Tolerance drops quickly once use stops, which is why overdose education is part of that plan.

Drug detox is one of seven addiction treatment services in Brooklyn that Surfpoint Recovery provides, alongside alcohol detox, opioid detox, benzodiazepine detox, medication-assisted treatment, dual diagnosis treatment, and short-term rehab.

Questions About Our Drug Detox Program

How long does a drug detox program take?

It depends on which substances you used, how long you used them, and your health. The crash after stimulant use usually eases over several days, though sleep and mood can take longer to settle. Opioid withdrawal tends to peak within the first 72 hours, and a benzodiazepine taper takes longer. Our medical team sets your timeline after your evaluation, not from a fixed number of days.

Is detox from cocaine or meth dangerous?

Stimulant withdrawal rarely causes the seizures linked to alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal, but it is not risk-free. The crash can bring severe depression, suicidal thoughts, agitation, or paranoia, and cravings are usually strongest in the first days. Supervised detox means clinical staff are present during the period when the risk of relapse is high.

Should I tell intake everything I have been using?

Yes. A full and honest picture, including alcohol, prescriptions, and anything bought on the street, helps our medical team plan a safe detox. Your call is handled under the federal privacy protections that apply to substance use treatment records. The urine test on arrival confirms what is in your system, so you do not need to be certain before you call.

Can I bring my prescription medications?

Yes. Bring them in their original labeled bottles, and a nurse will review them during your medical evaluation. Leave over-the-counter medications and vitamins at home, along with phones, laptops, and tablets. Toiletries should be alcohol-free, and our admissions page has the full list of what to bring and what to leave behind.

Does Medicaid cover drug detox at Surfpoint Recovery?

Surfpoint Recovery accepts Medicaid and Medicare along with all major commercial plans. Coverage varies by plan, so our admissions team checks your benefits for free before admission and explains what your share would be, if anything.
