New York City has many addiction treatment options, but not every facility offers the same access, insurance support, or level of care. For many patients and families, recommended rehab care needs to be close enough to reach, properly licensed, and able to support the full treatment process from detox through discharge planning. Location matters, but so does what happens once a patient walks through the door.
Staying Close to Home Matters in Recovery
Some people believe leaving the city for treatment is always better. For certain patients, distance can help. For others, staying closer to home makes treatment more realistic and easier to complete.
Family responsibilities, custody issues, work concerns, court requirements, and transportation can all affect whether someone enters care. If treatment is too far away, the distance itself can become a barrier.
Surfpoint Recovery is located at 2316 Surf Avenue in Coney Island, Brooklyn. The facility is reachable by the D, F, N, and Q subway lines at Coney Island/Stillwell Avenue, by car from the Belt Parkway, and by NYC Ferry. Patients from Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Manhattan, and northern New Jersey can reach us without leaving the region.
Medicaid Access Is Not Consistent Across NYC Facilities
Insurance is one of the biggest practical issues when choosing a rehab center. Many people in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island rely on Medicaid, but not every inpatient facility accepts it.
Surfpoint Recovery accepts major Medicaid plans, including Healthfirst, MetroPlus, Fidelis Care, Molina, and Wellcare. We also accept Medicare and select commercial insurance plans. Our insurance team verifies coverage at no cost before admission, so patients and families know where they stand.
Being turned away because of insurance can stop someone from seeking care altogether. Our admissions process is built to make that step clearer and less stressful. Our OASAS license allows us to accept Medicaid reimbursement for inpatient substance use disorder treatment.
Dual Accreditation: What OASAS and CARF Actually Mean
Surfpoint Recovery is licensed by New York State OASAS, which is required for inpatient detox and residential rehab programs in New York. OASAS reviews staffing, clinical practices, patient care standards, and compliance with state requirements.
We also hold CARF Three-Year Accreditation for both detox and residential rehabilitation. CARF accreditation is voluntary and requires an outside review of clinical quality, patient rights, outcomes, and organizational practices. Not every Brooklyn-area facility holds this accreditation.
Surfpoint Recovery is also LegitScript-certified, which is the verification standard used by platforms like Google and Meta for addiction treatment providers.
The Full Treatment Arc Under One Roof
One of the most difficult points in addiction treatment is the transition from detox to rehab. If a patient completes detox and then has to find another facility for residential treatment, the gap can create real risk.
Surfpoint Recovery provides medically supervised detox, medication-assisted treatment when appropriate, stabilization, psychiatric evaluation within 24 hours of rehab admission, 28-day residential rehabilitation, individual counseling, group counseling, skilled nursing, and discharge planning in one facility.
Patients who begin in detox can move directly into residential rehab without leaving the building. That continuity helps reduce delays and keeps the care plan connected from the start.
Clinical Staff, You Can Look Up by Name
A treatment facility should be clear about who provides care. At Surfpoint Recovery, our leadership is named and credentialed.
Dr. Ramsey Joudeh serves as Medical Director and oversees detox protocols and medication-assisted treatment decisions. Joseph Turkel is the Assistant Medical Director. Vincent Marchese, our Program Director, holds an MSW from Fordham University and an Advanced CASAC credential.
Alet Coke serves as Clinical Director of the clinical team. Sylvia Foldes-Berman, our Creative Director of Recreation and Clinical Training, is a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist and Board-Certified Music Therapist. These are real clinicians involved in patient care, not anonymous names behind a program description.
A Setting That Supports the Work of Recovery
The environment matters during inpatient treatment. Patients may spend 21 to 28 days in care, so the setting should feel structured, calm, and supportive.
Our Coney Island facility is a modern inpatient center close to the waterfront. Patients receive three chef-prepared meals daily, have access to an outdoor garden up to 4 times per day, and are supported by on-site nursing staff 24/7. Laundry is handled by staff, and rooms include TVs with curated programming.
Recreational programming, music therapy, and arts-based activities are part of the schedule. This is not a resort. It is a clinical treatment facility built to support recovery with care, structure, and dignity.
